Session 1 ‘Positive ways to help them behave’
Facilitators: Whitley Bay High School

How to create a climate of engagement and good behaviour in your classroom

Session 2 Reluctant Writers? Engagement and Motivation in Literacy
Facilitator: Carol Allen

This session will start from the premise that there are a wide variety of reasons why children are reluctant writers from those with physical barriers to learning, through those with a range of learning difficulties to those who struggle with social-emotional and anxiety issues. From working with hands to alert the neurological networks before writing through to creating personalised books for those with particular interests, this practical session will help us evaluate a range of ideas to support our students. How do you quickly assess the effectiveness of writing implements to reduce the physical effort of handwritten production? We will look at creative stimuli to immerse children with ideas to form the subject of their writing; assistive technology (low and high tech) that supports everyone to be a successful writer; writing and blogging for a world-wide audience; using symbol supported writing effectively and creative alternatives to writing such as podcasting, vlogging, animation and writing on the move!

Session 3: Assessing FOR pupils and you
Facilitators: Janice Gibson, SIA Assessment; Karen Knox, SIA Secondary Maths; Gareth Mcquillan, SIA Science

“If formative assessment is all about improving the future teaching and learning for your pupils, this session focuses on making formative assessment work for you and your pupils. The session will equip you with some practical assessment strategies to use with pupils of any age.

Session 4 Feel the Beat!
Facilitator: Catherine Worton, SIA Early Years

In this workshop for early years and year one teacher participants will have the opportunity to develop a range of strategies and activities around the concept of Steady Beat. In the classroom these activities will be value to:

– develop listening and attention skills
– encourage co-operation
– improve children’s concentration
– build a sense of whole class achievement

The workshop is aimed at classroom teachers who want to bring a bit more rhythm to their teaching day. Come and join in the fun.
