Keynote – Jan Dubiel
Jan Dubiel is the National Development Manager at Early Excellence and works as part of the team to support Early Years practitioners and Settings in all aspects of practice and provision. Having trained as an Early Years specialist, Jan worked as a Nursery, Reception and Year 1 teacher in schools across the country, leading teams as an Early Years co-ordinator. Following roles as an Early Years Consultant and Senior Adviser, he was appointed by the then Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) to lead on the management of the (Early Years) Foundation Stage Profile, and had national responsibility for its implementation and moderation, developing guidance and support materials and working at a strategic level with policy makers.
Jan has developed a national and international reputation as a conference speaker, consultant and trainer and he has written widely on different aspects of Early Years pedagogy. His first book “Effective Assessment in the EYFS” was published by SAGE in 2014.

Raising Exceeding Judgements in Reception
This workshop will take a look at our journey into raising exceeding judgements at the end of EYFS with particular focus to the learning environment, following children’s interests and the role of adults within play. We will share successes as well as challenges, with the opportunities to reflect on current practice.
Ups and downs and Ins and outs
This workshop will be focused on the journey that we have been on while changing both our indoor and outdoor environments to accommodate new and changing ideas. We will share our high and low points â€“ we have had many of both. The discussion will focus on the impact that this has had on our children and their learning as well as us as Reception staff, plus what this means as we move forward.
Diminishing the Difference in the Prime Areas
Developing an alternative model of provision which establishes, and supports, the foundations for life-long successful learning. Practitioners have looked beyond their rich, well established school based practice and provision, to develop off site, outdoor experiences. The outdoor environment has offered a unique intervention; embedding rich learning opportunities, developing strong self-regulation skills, enabling new relationships, transforming confidence and self-esteem. This approach has transformed opportunities for some of the most disadvantaged individuals. The workshop will cover:
- Case studies of individual children, exemplifying progress in each of the Prime Areas.
- Impact on the quality, quantity and range of evidence.
- Impact on progress and data.
- How relationships have been developed and extended between adults and children and between individual children.
- Examples of individual transformations and patterns of transformation across the wider group.
Big Ideas in Everyday Mathematics
The focus of this workshop will be on how we have embedded maths and the use of manipulativeâ€‹sâ€‹ into everyday routines giving children the opportunity to talk about and represent maths in everyday situations. We will also be sharing â€‹how we have used â€‹mathsâ€‹ stories to â€‹make significant improvements in children’s maths learning by understanding the Big Ideas.
Developing Communication and Language in EYFS
We are a school without a nursery and around a third of our children enter Reception already having a referral to speech and language. This workshop will share our journey this year and the changes we have made to our environment and practice.
